Search Training & Search
An update here is long overdue. September has been an interesting month.
I attended the L.A.S.T. (Locate, Access, Stabilize, Transport) Conference that was given by the North Carolina Search & Rescue Advisory Council at Camp Caraway just outside of Asheboro. It was an excellent learning experience. Highlights were:
Dr. John Williams of Western North Carolina University talking on Human Remains Detection. Dr. Williams is a forensic pathologist and studies the decay of human remains and assists law inforcement and search & rescue with solving crimes and location of missing persons.
Teepa Snow spoke on searching for alzheimer patients. Teepa Snow, MS, OTR/L, FAOTA is a licensed occupational therapist with 23 years of practice and teaching experience in geriatric settings, including home health agencies, assisted living facilities, hospitals, nursing homes and rehabilitation centers. She was dynamic in her presentation and very interesting.
On the 19th, 20th & 21st I participated in a search in Jacksonville, NC for a marine who has been missing since about the first of August. He is wanted by the Feds for investigation of some alleged criminal charges so I can't elaborate other than to say that we searched for 2 days with about six cadaver dog teams and did not find him.

Ernesto, Anniversary & Backyard
ERNESTO
Well, this week we got off easy as far as Hurricane/Tropical Storm Ernesto is concerned. The eye went east of I-95 and we got more wind and rain from a thunderstorm on Wednesday than from Ernesto. The mail must go through, but Time-Warner Cable didn't fare so well. Why do people have to drive through deep water?? Aren't boats intended for that?
ANNIVERSARY
On Wednesday, Angie and I celebrated our 49th wedding anniversary by having lunch together at the Pinecrest Inn & Restaurant in Pinehurst.

It was a nice place and we enjoyed it. All of the water occurred when we went shopping afterwards. The storm knocked out all of the credit card machines so we came home.
BACKYARD
The butterflies in our yard are as thick as flies. One of the reasons are the beautiful Lantanas that we see from our patio. We eat lunch there every day now that it has cooled off.
As I was clearing the fallen pine straw, I found a Pine Woods Tree Frog that I had not noticed before. Our North Carolina Wildlife Magazine came this week. It had a picture of one in the inside cover. That made me a little more alert to it's presence here.
