Toxic Spill!

TOXIC SPILL!....WAIT, IT'S DEER PEE
The employees of a state public health lab in Frankfort, KY., were only following company protecol, but they must be the laughing stock of the Bluegrass State's deer hunters. Here's what happened when an unidentified brown liquid was found in a lab supervisors office: More than a dozen people were quarantined, four with "primary exposure" and 12 with "secondary exposure"; 100 people were evacuated from the building; the four people who were in direct contact with the foul-smelling fluid were taken to a hospital for checkups; two people went to their physicians for "minor symptoms" (your guess is as good as ours); and a National Guard hazardous materials crew was dispatched to examine the liquid, which it identified as animal urine. At press time, Kentucky State Police were still investigating how the deer pee got in the office. (Associated Press, 07/30/05)

Both New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin and Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Babineaux Blanco ought to look like this when the whole thing is over!

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- In sometimes heated testimony before a congressional committee Tuesday, former Federal Emergency Management Agency chief Michael Brown blamed Louisiana's leaders for dragging their heels last month as Hurricane Katrina approached the Gulf Coast.

Brown faced sharp questions during a House select committee probing the federal, state and local response to Katrina. The storm devastated Mississippi coastal towns August 29 and left most of New Orleans flooded when the city's protective levees failed at several points.

In more than six hours of testimony, Brown said Mississippi and Alabama had evacuated properly but that New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin and Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Babineaux Blanco were reluctant to order an evacuation.

Hurricane Relief

I have noticed several eighteen wheeler trailers parked in shopping center parking lots collecting clothing for hurricane relief. I applaud these people's efforts, but do they know what they are doing?

I have read several articles in the local papers and heard numerous times on TV that they do not want clothing contributions!

When the clothing reaches it's destination, it needs to be inspected for holes & tears, cleanliness, and general condition. That which is junk needs to be disposed. That which is usable needs to be sorted by category and size, and labeled.

There isn't enough help to do this. People are too busy with more important tasks. The clothing problem, since people are now dispersed, can be solved by giving them vouchers (paid for by cash donations) and send them down to Wal Mart, etc. to get what they need.

These clothing drives do accomplish one thing. They enable people to clean out their attics, basements, garages, & closets and get rid of old junk. Some of the things that show up at clothing collections are high heeled shoes, bathing suits , dirty place mats, holy socks, and "you name it" To help the displaced??

I had an instructor for a class on Weapons of Mass Ddestruction and Mass Casualties who was the "Logistics Chief" during the World Trade Center Recovery. He stated that they just rented several warehouses outside of NYC and diverted these well meaning trucks to them to be unloaded for disposal at some future time.

So what should you do?

1 Send Money to the Red Cross, Salvation Army or your church's disaster relief organization or other various organizations being advertised.

2. Volunteer for one of these organizations. They send in evaluation teams to determine needs and can direct your efforts so that they count.

Pit Bull ????

I heard from my brother, Don yesterday. He sent me this picture that I don't recognize. Could it be the Pit Bull after someone plucked the porky quills out of it????

A Little Humor

It has been quiet around here lately so I thought that I would throw a little humor your way.

This morning, I worked at the Food Pantry and we gave food baskets to 165 needy families.

We haven't had an E.M.S. call since last Saturday! For those of you that don't know, I am a volunteer E.M.T. We make house calls for doctors.

Weekly Events 9/11/05

It was a fun week this past week. We had a very generous offering for hurricane relief at church on Sunday so since I am "Disaster Coordinator", I had to spend the money where it would do the most good. I had two hard working ladies shop for towels, washcloths, bath soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, combs, nail files and band-aids. They came back with enough to make 200 "Health Care Kits" in accordance with UMCOR's specifications. We delivered those and have completed shopping to put together 400 more this week.

I had a "Community First Aid" class to teach on Friday from noon to 5:00 and went to a dive rescue class from 6 to 8 p.m.

I also had to pick up left over produce, bread and cakes from Food Lion and deliver them to the Food Pantry each day this week.

Yesterday, we had a sailboat race but the wind was too strong and gusty, I dumped and went swimming and the race was called off.

Pins & Needles

Looks like porcupines and pit bulls don't mix very well. I'll bet that there is one naked porcupine walking around somewhere
